Insider Tip: Monks' food and amazing coffee in Japan

Don't just come to Japan for the scenery.

Don't just come to Japan for the scenery.

The real Japan is easy to find if you look beneath the shiny cities' surfaces and the delicious food is a winner every time! Below are two of my favourite "food coma"moments from a recent trip….

The best meal I had was a delicious vegan kaiseki (a traditional multi-course Japanese meal) at Shigetsu, in the gorgeous setting of the Tenryu-ji Temple in Arashiyama, Kyoto. It was a unique experience trying monks' food, which places "balance" ahead of taste. Regardless, there was plenty of taste – tiny portions but many, many dishes that leave you more than satisfied. A highlight was a sort of crispy dumpling stuffed with radish, mushrooms and water chestnut in a light broth.

The best coffee I found was at Omotesando Koffee, Omotesando, Tokyo. This is it. You don't get better coffee than this in Japan. To order what you would call a flat white or latte,  ask for a cappuccino. This is a coffee house done right; all they serve is coffee and little baked custard (kashi) treats to accompany it. Sadly, Omotsando Koffee closed in December 2015 but owner Eiichi Kunitomo has opened a new coffee shop called Toranomon Koffee and a bean specialist named Koffee Mameya in Omotesando Koffee's old spot, albeit in a new building.
