Pa. Gov. Tom Wolf restricts some travel in anticipation of snowstorm

Gov. Tom Wolf called on residents to just stay home and drivers to avoid "unnecessary travel" in anticipation of the nor'easter that is expected to dump up to 2 feet of snow on the Lehigh Valley and parts of the East Coast.

"Tuesday is going to be a good day to stay home," Wolf said at an afternoon news conference at PEMA headquarters.

Wolf urged employers to give workers the day off and asked everyone to stay off the roads and check on elderly neighbors because authorities, including 700 national Guardsmen, may not be able to reach them in an emergency.

The National Weather Service late Monday afternoon issued a blizzard warning, saying near blizzard conditions are likely for a few hours in eastern Pennsylvania and portions of northern New Jersey where snowfall rates of 2 to 4 inches per hour are expected.

In anticipation of the storm, Wolf issued an official "Proclamation of Disaster Emergency," that calls for:

•PennDOT to deploy additional equipment to the Lehigh Valley, Poconos and other eastern parts of the state that are expected to face the brunt of the storm.

•Reduced speeds to 45 mph and restricts travel for large commercial vehicles on interstates and the Turnpike.

•Asks residents and commercial drivers to delay unnecessary travel to let road crews and emergency responders work.

•Ban on tandem truck trailers, empty trailers, towed trailers, buses, recreational vehicles and motorcycles on interstates, including 76, 80, 81, 476 and all expressways not on the interstate system.

•Authorizes the Department of Transportation to waive regulations related to drivers of commercial vehicles to ensure the timely movement of commodities, particularly food and home heating fuel.

•Provides consumer protections against price gouging by prohibiting companies from charging a price for consumer goods or services that exceeds
