Long lines for food, state rations, and the black market have forced hungry Venezuelans to look for alternative ways to obtain food. An increasingly popular option now, is taking a long journey over Venezuela's border into neighboring countries like Columbia and Brazil, which offer sustainable amounts of food at an affordable cost.
In the past few months, Venezuelans have traveled around 11 hours to Columbia, overcrowding their marketplaces so that they can buy food for their families. Columbia has now closed its borders in fear of the sudden and extreme border crossings.
As a result, Venezuelans have resorted to taking 18 hour bus trips from Caracas and other highly populated cities into Brazil, just to buy groceries. These buses also travel overnight to accommodate those with regular daytime jobs. They can travel to Brazil to stock up on food, and get back in time to fulfill the rest of their obligations.
This extreme inconvenience has become a necessity for most Venezuelans, as it is their only dependable way to access food in their failing, socialist nation.
Every day the situation grows worse, with nutrition continually declining and normal activity virtually gone, people's lives center around working and trying to get their hands on some food to survive.
