Local High School students hand out food, play soccer with people seeking refuge in Belgrade, and travel new "Trail of Tears"

At a new local high school, three students spent their spring break volunteering at the main park in Belgrade, Serbia, and traveling from Greece to Germany over two weeks from April 2nd-16th, which spanned nearly 1,800 miles. The students, a sophomore and two juniors, handed out food with Refugee Aid Serbia, a local NGO, to men, women and children in the central park in Belgrade, and played soccer with the men who are sleeping out in the open on the ground.

The trip will be discussed at an event on May 19th at 7:30 p.m. at the New Village School, which will explore the current situation of those of us seeking refuge from wars such as those raging in Syria and Iraq, amongst many other countries, and from poverty and dire circumstances, witnessed by our High School students and teachers on this new "Trail of Tears" from Greece to Germany.

The students acted as student journalists, documenting the humanitarian crisis in Greece, Serbia and in Berlin, Germany through writing, photographs and art work.

The trip was conceived of by one of the students at the New Village High School, which is in its first year of operation in Sausalito. The New Village High School is part of the New Village School, which uses the picture of human development described by Rudolf Steiner and has expanded on and modified the curriculum to suit the needs of children in the 21st century.
