New Zealand Motor Caravan Association Southland branch chairperson Brian McFaul has helped to organise a special site for campervans for the Bluff Oyster & Food Festival.

Dozens of campervanners could descend upon Bluff from Friday, as a special spot has been assigned to them for the Bluff Oyster & Food Festival.

The New Zealand Motor Caravan Association has organised for certified self-contained vehicles to be able to park at Ocean Beach, near the entrance to the port town, in time for the Bluff Oyster & Food Festival on Saturday.

It's even hired minivans to shuttle people from the site to the festival and back again.

Southland association branch treasurer Sue McKerchar said she had received more than 50 inquiries from people who were interested in parking at the site.

People who had called were coming from as far away as Auckland, the Wairarapa and New Plymouth, she said.

"I've had a lot of people telling me it's [the festival] been on their bucket list."

Southland branch chairperson Brian McFaul said offering the site was part of the association's Motor Home Friendly Towns special events scheme, where the association tried to secure parking sites for big events.

More and more people were choosing to travel greater distances for longer periods of time in their campervans, McFaul said.

"There's a lot of people living on the road. Some for up to two to three months at a time."

McKerchar said people who wanted to use the site did not have to be association members, but they did have to be in certified self-contained vehicles, and were responsible for getting their own festival tickets.

"So hopefully they've all got theirs because it's sold out."

People could arrive at the site from midday on Friday, she said.

On Sunday, Bluff Oyster & Food Festival Committee chairman John Edminstin said while tickets had been sold out, there would be limited gate sales on the day.

Gates open 10.30am on Saturday.
