Travel + Leisure names Philly's 7 best dive bars

Travel + Leisure, which bills itself as "a one-stop resource for sophisticated travelers," is out with a list of Philadelphia's seven best dive bars.

Ooh, just in time for tourist season.

Mag contributor Sarah Maiellano asked city bartenders for their picks.

On the list - which is studded with the usual joints (Bob & Barbara's, Dirty Frank's, Tattooed Mom) - is the more under-the-radar Atlantis the Lost Bar in Kensington. JB Bernstein, beverage manager of Vernick Food & Drink, said it has a "classic dive feel, no frills. ... The bartenders are down to earth, and there's a pool table in the back. Most importantly, they let my dog Melvin in to chill out while I'm having a beer."

The outlier here is McGillin's Olde Ale House, the city's oldest bar. "While not a typical dive bar," Maiellano writes, "fans ... may affectionately use the term to describe it."

The reaction on McGillin's Facebook's page has been horror,

"It's national press," said Christopher Mullins Jr., son of longtime owners Mary Ellen and Chris Mullins. "We love the attention, but disagree. McGillin's is not a dive bar."
